The Bible Through the Eyes of Its Authors is an engaging and unique book that illuminates what each of the Bible’s many wonderful stories meant to the ancient authors who wrote them. It portrays their timeless struggle to make sense of their world and of God’s role in it in a vain effort to create an ideal society in a landscape dominated by ruthless imperial powers.

About the Book
The Bible’s authors belonged to an ancient literate elite that advocated political, social, military and religious agendas for their nation. They were part of an old civilization with a two-millennium imperial history before their nation was founded. Thus they inherited an advanced culture that embodied the harsh values of the imperial powers, along with their humanistic traditions.

  • The book presents their legacy, the Bible, as an epic drama filled with human passion, its many actors manifesting both wisdom and folly.

  • By organizing the biblical drama into 23 acts and 210 scenes, March enables the reader to savor and reflect on each story, and to appreciate its role in the epic as a whole.

Using archaeological evidence March applies knowledge about the authors’ world in several appendices and explains their stories in an enjoyable, clear and innovative way that conveys an entirely new understanding of the Bible. Unlike traditional Bible study, March does not infer God’s intent, but that of the Bible’s authors. This creates a common ground for believers and non-believers to discuss ethics, morality, and the principles of a just society in terms of our common human experience, including our personal ways of making sense of God.

March has performed a valuable service to anyone, layman or serious scholar, who is interested in the historical origins of the Bible and the motivations of its writers. He provides a powerful explanation for the obvious inconsistencies in many Biblical stories. I found the case he makes for his thesis, that the writers were often politically motivated, persuasive and not easily dismissed. This is a book well worth reading.
